Liquid Nitrogen Supply Procedures (Staff only)
Usage of liquid nitrogen at BioCARS:
- BioCARS staff refills large liquid nitrogen tanks (50LD, XL-65, XL-240)
- Users can use small amounts of liquid nitrogen (4LD dewars are provided)
Always wear cryo-gloves and eyewear when working with liquid nitrogen.
How to re-fill 4LD dewars
- Check 50LD dewar. A full dewar is heavy (180 lb) and has a pressure of 10 psi. If is it too light or the pressure is low, notify BioCARS staff.
- Wear protective goggles and gloves.
- Put the phase separator (the end section of the transfer line) into the mouth of the 4LD dewar.
- Gradually open the "LIQUID" valve. At beginning of the fill, a large amount of nitrogen gas is generated. You have to control the opening of the valve. Do not open it fully until the transfer line is cold. Never open the "VENT" valve.
- When the 4LD dewar is full, close the "LIQUID" valve.
