- September 2007 -

BioCARS has completed a major upgrade to the 14-ID beamline. The new configuration extends the time-resolved crystallography capability to the 100ps time domain, while utilizing the standard 24-bunch mode of the APS storage ring.

X-ray source

The previous undulator A (U33) has been replaced by two new undulators (U23 and U27), used in a collinear configuration. For pink-beam time-resolved experiments, the new sources will provide more than 1010 photons per single 100ps X-ray pulse (APS 24-bunch mode, ~4mA/bunch).

Optics

A newly installed Kirkpatrick-Baez mirror system will improve the focusing of the X-ray beam from the original ~1:1 to ~8.3:1(h)/5.2:1(v) and bring the beam size to 90 µm2 (h) x 35 µm2 (v). A new optics enclosure (14-ID-C SOE) was built to house the new mirror pair. Also, a new Kohzu monochromator (Si 111), installed in the 14-ID-A FOE, rounded out the optics upgrade.
