Acceptance & Registration Fee
Applicants will be notified by e-mail of acceptance by October 1. Successful applicants will pay a $50 registration fee. Further details about the program and logistics will be sent with the acceptance letter.
APS Registration
Successful applicants must register as an APS user by October 15 via the APS online form. Argonne National Laboratory is a controlled-access facility. By registering, you begin the administrative steps required to gain approval for you to enter the Argonne site and to do hands-on work at the APS. Special considerations apply to persons who are not U.S. citizens. Please DO NOT come to Argonne until you have received confirmation from the APS User Office that permission has been granted for your visit.
Meals & Lodging
Meals will be provided from breakfast on Wednesday, Nov. 7, through lunch on Friday, Nov. 9.
Onsite housing will be provided at the Argonne Guest House for the nights of November 6, 7, and 8, if desired. Payment for any additional nights is the responsibility of the participant. Once notified of acceptance, you may reserve a room by contacting the Guest House, located less than a block from the APS (see map). Reservations must be made by October 22. Specify “LSXS School” when making your reservation.
A number of other hotels are located relatively close to Argonne; a list can be found by an Internet search. No special rates have been established for these hotels, and participants who choose to stay offsite are responsible for all costs. Transportation will not be provided.
Travel
Argonne National Laboratory is about 45 minutes by car from each of the two major Chicago airports, O'Hare and Midway (see map). Limousine service is available from each airport, and major car rental agencies serve both airports. Limo reservations can be made by calling either of these companies (whose staff are familiar with access requirements at Argonne):
- A-1 Limousine 630.833.3788
- United Livery Service 630.969.3865 or out of state 800.331.9037
From O'Hare Airport: Drive east (toward Chicago) on Interstate 190 to the exit for Interstate 294 south (toward Indiana). Go south on Interstate 294 to the exit for Interstate 55 south (toward St. Louis); then take the southbound Cass Avenue exit (273A) off Interstate 55. Northgate Road, the entrance to the Laboratory's main gate, is on the right immediately after the frontage road road.
From Midway Airport: Take Cicero Avenue north to the entrance to Interstate 55 south (toward St. Louis), which will be on your left. From Interstate 55, take the southbound Cass Avenue exit (273A). Northgate Road, the entrance to the Laboratory's main gate, is on the right immediately after the frontage road.
Travel Reimbursement
Limited funds are available for travel support. Participants may request reimbursement for reasonable transportation expenses. (A reimbursement envelope will be provided; original receipts are required.)
Proper Attire
The temperature in the APS experiment hall floor is maintained at a constant 72°F (22°C) year round. Proper attire for work in the experiment hall includes closed-toe, covered-heel shoes and long pants. Sandals are not acceptable. Skirts may be worn if a lab coat is also worn.
