Liquid and Soft Matter Surface Scattering Interest Group
The science of liquid surfaces and interfaces underlies processes as diverse as electron and ion transfer at biomembranes, atmospheric aerosol and oceanic chemistry, lipid-protein interactions, surfactant ordering in detergents, emulsions, and foams, phase transfer catalysis, the spreading and thinning of paints, and the traction of rubber tires on a wet road.
Although this science is hundreds of years old, recent progress has utilized new tools, especially synchrotron radiation, that investigate the interface onthe molecular scale.
We have recently formed a Liquid and Soft Matter Surface Scattering Interest Group that meets monthly at the Advanced Photon Source near Chicago to discuss the latest science, methods, and techniques.
Attendees at the October, 2005, meeting (co-leaders are Binhua Lin (red shirt, front row) and Ivan Kuzmenko (second from right)
