  • Solid Surface X-ray
Scattering

Surface specific x-ray probes dedicated to solid surfaces and interfaces are available at ChemMatCARS. The following techniques are available or under development (*):

  • Reflectivity (XR)
  • Grazing Incidence X-Ray Diffraction (GIXD)
  • Standing Wave X-ray Fluorescence (XSW)
  • Diffuse Scattering (XDS)*
  • Grazing Incidence Small Angle X-ray Scattering (GISAXS - available in station 15-ID-D).

Hardware

Diffractometer
ChemMatCARS station 15-ID-B is equipped with a general purpose, 4-circle diffractometer (Huber). A crystal analyzer is also available for the detector arm. Note that the axes of the THETA and TWO-THETA motions are oriented horizontally, along the in/outboard direction.

Sample Environments

  • Vacuum furnace cell. Holds 1” samples
  • Controlled environment cell. Atmospheric pressure, humidified heliem flow cell. Holds samples up to 2”

Detectors

  • Scintillation detector (Oxford)
  • Linear position-sensitive (wire) detector (MMI)
  • Energy dispersive, Si-drift diode detector (Radiant) (contingent on availability from APS detector pool)
  • CCD Area detector 94 x 94 mm, 92 micron pixel size (Bruker 6000)

Vacuum furnace sample cell
Vacuum furnace sample cell used for thin polymer film melt experiments. Holds 1" diameter wafers. Temperatures up to 150°C.
Sample cell used for x-ray standing wave fluorescence and reflectivity experiments on biofilms Sample cell used for x-ray standing wave fluorescence and reflectivity experiments on biofilms. Runs at atmospheric pressure with humidified Helium environment.

Software

The diffractometer is controlled with the SPEC software package (Certified Scientific Software). Processing of raw data contained in SPEC-formatted files is achieved with a library of customized IDL procedures (RSI).
