XAS Training at Diamond, November 2011
XAS Course at Diamond, November 14-16, 2011
Software
We will be using the brand new and much improved versions of Athena and Artemis.
You should download and install the software in advance of the course. You should also test the programs at least at the level of starting Athena or Artemis and verifying that they start correctly. If this is done before the beginning of the course, we can spend more of our precious time learning about XAS!
- Windows users
Download the installer file from https://github.com/bruceravel/demeter/downloads. Save this file then double click to install it. This has been tested on Windows XP and Windows 7.
- Linux users
Follow the instructions at http://cars9.uchicago.edu/ifeffit/Demeter/InstallDemeterOnUnixWithGit. This is a bit time consuming the first time, but if you follow each step carefully, it should go successfully.
- Mac users
Sadly we do not yet have a native Mac installer package. The simplest way to use the new software on your Mac is under a Windows virtual machine. Here are instructions for making this work using Parallels. It should work similarly with other virtualization solutions. (The more ambitious among you could follow the linux installation instructions, which should work similarly on MacOS.)
Contact Bruce if you run into any problems. We will try to get your troubles resolved before the beginning of the course.
Lectures, handouts, and example data
During the course, there will be two kinds of presentations. There will be several lectures presented from prepared lecture materials. There will also be several software demonstrations. These demos all come with example data and some of them also involve accompanying handouts.
Copies of these materials can be downloaded from https://github.com/bruceravel/XAS-Education/downloads
The following PDF files are copies of the prepared lectures:
- second.pdf: The introductory lecture from Day 1
- noxtal.pdf: A short lecture about EXAFS data analysis from Day 2
- atea.pdf: The Advanced Topics lecture from day 3
Additionally, you should download the following accompaniments to the demonstrations:
- Examples.zip: A zip file containing all the data used in the demos as well as all the data shown in the lectures
- fes2.pdf: A handout accompanying the introductory Artemis demo from day 2
- methyltin.pdf: A handout accompanying one of the EXAFS data analysis examples from day 2
Note that the Examples.zip file contains another handout to accompany a XANES analysis demo on day 2. It is the file Examples/Au+Cyanobacteria/LCF_demo.pdf contained in that zip file.
