Why do ATHENA and ARTEMIS crash so frequently under Windows?
If you are experiencing many crashes of ATHENA or ARTEMIS under Windows, it is possible you have found a new bug. Much more likely, though, is that you have rediscovered a very well known bug.
There is a problem in the interaction among ATHENA or ARTEMIS, IFEFFIT, and PGPLOT on Windows. If you close the graphics window by clicking on the "close window" button in the upper right hand corner of the graphics window while ATHENA or ARTEMIS is running, this will result in a crash. Guaranteed. 100% of the time. You can minimize the graphics window to the task bar or drag it off to the side of the screen if you don't want to look at it, just don't close it.
Matt and I are aware of this problem but don't know how to solve it. Any substantive suggestions at the level of compiling IFEFFIT against the PGPLOT DLLs would be very welcome.
The rule of thumb is very simple:
Never close the graphics window while either ATHENA or ARTEMIS is running.
Just don't do it!
This problem does not exist under linux, unix, or OSX.
